Bison

European bison or Wisent actually. After going extinct in the wild in 1921, only a handful remained in European zoos. Following a successful breeding program the first animals were reintroduced to the wild in Poland. Everyone assumed that the wisent lived in extensive old growth forests, because well that was where the last wild animals had survived. And the consensus at the time was that Europe before the arrival of man must have been covered by extensive forests. Right? Well maybe not… During Roman times there were reports of migrating herds numbering thousands in Germany, Belgium and probably also the Netherlands. Recent theories also point to the role of large herbivores shaping the landscape by grazing pressure on vegetation. More grazing pressure in one place leads to less trees and a semi-open landscape with forests, scrubland and grasslands. To gain a better insight into the ecology of Wisent, small groups of wisent have been released into different landscape types. One interesting choice is a dune landscape in the Netherlands. I recently had the opportunity to go and see them for myself. To say they are impressive would be an understatement.

Europese bizons of wisenten. In 1921 was de soort uitgestorven in het wild. Na een succesvolle fokprogramma in dierentuinen werden de eerste dieren in 1952 losgelaten in Polen. Aangezien de laatste wilde dieren in uitgestrekte oude bossen voorkwamen, ging men ervan uit dat ze voorkwamen in… uitgestrekte oude bossen. Tijdens de Romeinse tijd waren er berichten van rondtrekkende kuddes van duizenden dieren. Inmiddels word de theorie van één aaneengesloten bos als beeld van hoe Europa eruitzag vóór de komst van de mens ook steeds meer in twijfel getrokken. Waarschijnlijk was het een mozaïek van bos en (half)open landschap. Om meer inzicht te krijgen in de ecologie van de Wisent worden er proeven uitgevoerd in verschillende landschapstypen in Europa. Waaronder de duinen in Nederland. Pas geleden had ik de mogelijkheid om oog in oog te staan met de eerste in een natuurgebied geboren Nederlandse wisenten. Ontzagwekkende dieren. Is dit wat de Romeinen zagen?
